Atomic things go boom. This fact has been established fairly well through history. The Atomic Bass earbuds from Radius are no exception to this rule. While they're not scientifically atomic, the bass is unusually powerful. These really live up to their name and go to show what it is that makes one pair of earbuds stand out from the next. Any glitch and fault in a set of earbuds can totally wreck the experience so its always a good to check out what you're buying so there are no regrets down the road. Closer Look:

The earbuds come packaged in a black box, no plastic. This kinda gave me an impression that this was not a typical cheap set of earbuds. The front of the box lets you the gold plated jack and earbuds inside.You get what you see which is a good thing. I only want to be surprised by the quality of the sound, not a defective or missing piece of equipment. Click the image below if you want to enlarge it.

Like usual, the back of the box gets into some of the specs and features which we'll get into later. There's also a little blurb about the design of these earbuds. It mentions how these are designed for people with an active lifestyle. Excellent news for us active gamers...right?

The impedance here is about the only thing that really stands out. 32 Ohms should give these a better quality than most other pairs which are at 16 Ohm.

Testing:

This part of the review will look at how well the earbuds perform in four main areas. First we'll take a look at how well the trebles, or higher parts of the song come through. Following that, the mid-tones will be scrutinized, followed by the lower bass tones in audio. The responsiveness is also an important quality to check out when buying a pair of earbuds or headphones so I'll take a look at that in the final part of the testing section. Before I start the testing however I burned these headphones in for 24 hours straight to make sure I get the best levels of performance I can. Kind of like warming up the engine of a car before taking it for a test drive. Let's get down to it.


I hope you have never had to own a set of headphones that has a lack of treble quality. If treble is sub-standard, it can wreck the sound of all of your favorite music. On the other hand, a high quality treble can enhance the experience entirely and I am happy to say that is what I found while I was listening to these Radius earbuds. Sounds were neither flat or tinny in the higher levels. They stayed consistent the whole way through. They even held their own in the most punishing of treble tests earning them an 8/10 in this area.


The mid-tone presentation also did better than I thought it would. Seriously, how close to a perfect audio experience can you expect to get with only a $40 pair of earbuds. Even if they are from Radius, you would expect them to be in an entirely different class from the best. Not so. They may not be the highest level of earbuds, but they pack a lot of quality. They gave the mid-tones everything they had and really rounded out all of my favorite songs and movies. The packaging said that these were tonally balanced for dance and hip-hop, but it was also right when it said they were versatile for a veriety of genres. Great job. 8/10.


Well now we have come to the low-level tone performance for these earbuds. I ran these through my usual bass tests to see what they have to offer. The sound is very satisfying and the range is excellent. The odd looking bend in the earbud mostly contributes to the bass as these soundwaves have a wider arc. The longer design allows them to develop fuller. This contributes a great deal to the overall experience and also make them well suited for movies, especially suspenseful ones. The sound does a good job of reaching into your head and vibrating its insides. A very good level of bass. The tones were deep and powerful where they needed to be, but softly audible in the right parts. They earned themselves a 9/10 for this area.


Responsiveness is critical. Any lag in the speed speakers affects video and games, unless of course you're watching dubbed over japanese films. In that case, there's nothing you can do but bear it or learn to speak japanese. I tested a bunch of different setups thoroughly without finding any problems. There was also no hiss or noise of any kind in the background, provided what you're listening to is good quality. In this area the earbuds performed solidly. Throw all of these categories together, and you have great set of earbuds. 9/10

Conclusion:

Everything having been tested and considered, it would be terribly hard to outclass these earbuds. Given their level of quality and their price range, it was not hard to fall in love with them. Their design gives them a great sound you can feel and a fit that you can't feel. I realize that the majority of ill-informed people won't be obliged to spend more than $10 or $15 dollars on a pair of headphones, but if you're looking to spend a little more to get a lot more out of your songs and movies, these should definitely be near the top of a short list. I know I'll be using these puppies for a long time yet. Thank you Radius and keep up the good work. Let us now look at the pros and cons of these earbuds.
