Traveling on the bus or air plain can sometimes be a very tedious trip, with little to do to entertain your self. What if I said if you can find a place to site down with your video enabled ipod you can enjoy the equivalent to a theater screen sized movie experience and virtually cut yourself off from your surroundings? This is exactly the kind of experience the people at Vuzix were trying to simulate with the Vuzix iWear AV310 Widescreen Headset Display. Not only can you watch movies off your ipod you can also plug them directly into virtually any media device with composite outputs on it. Let's get a closer look at these bad boys:

Provided by: Vuzix

Price: $249.95

Closer Look:

The packaging for the Vuzix iWear AV310 Widescreen Headset Display is nicely designed and shows how cool you’ll look with them on, or not depends who your group of friends are. If they are really into cyberpunk you will be the envy of all your friends if they are more the type to crush beer cans on their heads and watch UFC, maybe, just maybe, you might not want to sport these in your particular group of friends. The back of the packaging has a ton of pertinent info and specs for all your technological arousal needs, or if you just happen to like to know what you are spending $250 on..

Included with the Vuzix iWear AV310 Widescreen Headset Display is both ipod and composite connectors, carrying case, earpads, manual, behind the neck strap, and the all important feature batteries ARE included.

The Vuzix iWear AV310 Widescreen Headset Display is very well designed the piano black finish, while being a horrible fingerprint magnet, is very aesthetically pleasing. Although there is a bit of weight to the Vuzix’s they are remarkably compact.

Just like a pair of binoculars not everyone’s vision is the same so the need for lens adjustment is a must with any device like this. The nice aspect to the Vuzix iWear AV310 Widescreen Headset Display is the ability to individually focus each side to get the perfect balance for those that cannot see clearly out of one eye but fine out the other. The inline controls are very simple the power button also doubles as other functions in the menu as do the volume buttons and the 4th button is to bring up the menu. Although it seems bulky it wasn’t that bad during testing I like a little bit of a bigger sized navigation control especially if I cannot look at it when fumbling for the right button.

Let's get to the specifications and testing:

Specifications:

  • 16:9 widescreen and standard 4:3 screen formats
  • Equivalent to 52" screen viewed from 9 feet

Testing:

For testing of the Vuzix iWear AV310 Widescreen Headset Display I used them for several days in order to get a feel for them and get used to their unique design. I will be marking the Vuzix on an out of 10 basis the criteria will be picture quality, isolation, comfort, and sound quality.

Picture Quality:

I tried several movies with a lot of special effect and scenery obvious choices were Starwars and  Indiana Jones Crystal Skull due to there abundance of different scenes and special effects. I must say even thought the Vuzix iWear AV310 Widescreen Headset Display is not HD it was an extremely impressive picture quality they achieved for that reason they received:

 9/10

Isolation:

Isolation is very important when it comes to something you will be wearing in order to avoid the bustle of what’s going on around you in a plain or bus to work. Because you can see above and below the Vuzix iWear AV310 Widescreen Headset Display it is very difficult to focus on the movie one accessory I strongly suggest investing in is the Vuzix immersive eyeshield which cane be purchase for $14.95. If you are in a dark room by yourself the isolation experience is amazing but this is not what we are striving for so for this reason they received the fallowing score for isolation:

 6.5/10

Comfort:

Next to picture quality comfort is arguably the second most important feature of a device like this. I notice while wearing the Vuzix’s for an extended period of time the weight on the nose piece got to bee a bit taxing. While laying back a bit I noticed the strain much less noticeable but this may be something to keep in mind for yourself if you have a particularly low tolerance for discomfort. For these reasons the Vuzix’s received:

 7/10

Sound Quality:

Although the range on the Vuzix iWear AV310 Widescreen Headset Display was pretty good the earbuds never frapped or hissed so the sound was pretty clean. There was a down side though, the earbuds didn’t go as loud as I would have liked they needed just a little more power and they would have been great. The Vuzix’s received the fallowing score for Sound Quality:

 8 /10

Let's check out the final thoughts:
Conclusion:

Even thought the Vuzix iWear AV310 Widescreen Headset Display had some negative by no means was this a poorly made product. The over all experience was very impressive. The effect of this display was the equivalent to sitting in the back of a theater with no one else in your way and no babies crying. Everyone I let try these out were extremely impressed with the over all experience. With all of the advances in personal surround sound technology I would love to see Vuzix release a deluxe headset with full sized 5.1 or virtual 7.1 surround sound “cans” I don’t care if it takes 20 AA batteries it will still be worth it.

Would I recommend these? How could I not even though there were some draw backs they were the most impressive headset display I have personally tried. If you are one of the unfortunate few with a 2 hour buss ride everyday to work I suggest purchasing a set of these to ease the pain.

Pros:

  • Big Screen Feel
  • Picture Quality
  • Sleek Design
  • Great for an Immersive Gaming Experience
  • 3D Capable
Cons:
  • Could be Louder
  • Can be a bit Uncomfortable Till you get Use to Them
