Steelseries Siberia V2 Pro Gaming Headset Review
Gaming Headsets have come a long way over the past few years. Until recently all it took to be constituted a gaming headset was adding new plastic cowling and slapping a sticker on the headset that said “for gaming.”Sound engineers have been recruited and the quality has gone sky high. We are seeing very impressive audio come from inexpensive headsets that you cannot even get from a headphone of the same price. Steelseries is one such company pumping out high end quality headsets at a fraction of the price of the headphone equivalent. Today we will be looking at the Steelseries Siberia V2 Pro Gaming Headset, and I will be telling you exactly how I feel about it:

In order to properly test the Steelseries Siberia V2 Pro Gaming Headset I first have to properly burn them in. A minimum of 24 hours of burn in on headphones will produce a much better quality from the headphones and you can really start seeing the quality or coloration of the headphones abilities. We will be testing the Headset under 3 conditions: Music, Movies, and of course Gaming.
To really test the sound quality of the V2’s I ran them through my Burson Audio HA-160 Headphone amp. The V2’s were impressive plugged directly into my iPhone to begin with, but after amplifying, the bass was completely insane. The overall clarity and sound depth was incredible. The mids and highs were crisp and precise, and the bass was deep and punching. The Steelseries Siberia V2 Pro Gaming Headset is one of the best headphones I have ever heard. Normally I love free air headphones but in this case the V2’s are not open air, I was surprised by this because I have never heard this airy quality ever in a closed back designed headphone. You get all the quality sounds of an open air headphone but all the sound isolations and almost zero bleed through effect of a closed back. These things are a 10 for music.
To fully test the V2’s I decided to try them with my Asus Xonar sound card which mimics full surrounds sound and then just a standard on board soundcard with my headphone amp. Using the Xonar the 3d effect was incredible. I could hear everything from all around me like I was sitting in my theatre room listening to my surrounds sound. Every scrape and foot shuffles was crisp and amazing. The bass was much more incredible with the HA-160 head amp; deep voices and explosions felt like that were resonating off my rib cage. The overall movie experience in both cases was a 9 or better.
I will combine gaming and voice all in one. The gaming experience on PC was great coupling the effects of the Xonar with the V2’s made a very vivid virtual 3d effect. Picking out where gunfire and voices were coming from was very easy. If you have quality sounds your response time increases exponentially over poor sounds systems. If you can’t tell exactly where your team and enemies are, you’re going to be game over very shortly. The voice is good, not great, with the V2’s my teams heard me just as well with the V2’s as they did with my Siberian Neckband, Creative Fatal1ties, and Pulsar headsets; so overall it is a great mic. My personal preference is that headsets should start amplifying the mics for better performance but I am anal when it comes to audio quality overall it is more than just adequate for mic performance.
Xbox 360, was a bit of a disappointment. Just like the neckband you have to plug the headset in both your controller and the TV. I am not sure if this is because Microsoft has some sort of proprietary technology it uses on the headphones but I can’t get the headset audio to go through the Siberia V2’s unless I set the Xbox to play voice through the speakers and hook up the headphone cable to the TV. This is very distracting if you are in the middle of the fighting and you team mate is talking to you and his voice blends in with gun fire and explosions. I had to keep saying what, pardon, sorry man I really can’t here you, over and over again, it got very tiresome. I would personally never use the Siberia V2’s for Xbox headset replacement ever again it drives me nuts. So for PC I give them a solid 8 and for Xbox 360 they get a 4.
Overall the Steelseries Siberia V2 Pro Gaming Headset is one of the best headsets I have ever personally used. They don’t only perform on par and some cases better than other very highend headsets but they also perform on par or better with headphones equal to and in some cases even twice the price of them. Steelseries is a great company with great products the only problem I have is the Xbox 360 issues I don’t know why there are issues but it is something that needs t be fixed as soon as possible.
Would I recommend this product? Not for Xbox but for everything else absolutely it is by far the best headset for audio quality I have personally used and for its price I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quality headset or even a great pair of headphones.
