Ultimate Ears MetroFi 220vi Earbud, Headset Review

Music is one of the most euphoric and pleasant things this life has to offer. Bands like Radiohead believe music is a replacement for recreational drugs. I for one agree music can bring out mental pictures and feelings no drug could mimic and without the adverse effects. I am a major music junky otherwise known as audiophile I frequent several forums other then my own to find out all the info I can to get that “perfect sound” everyone is striving for. This information begs the question what does an audiophile use when he can’t drag his favorite cans and headphone amp around with them? This is where high quality earbuds and IEM’s come in to play Ultimate Ears is one such company with some very high end IEM’s and earbuds. Let’s see how their MetroFi 220vi Earbud’s do:

Closer Look:

The packaging for the MetroFi 220vi Earbuds is very well designed I love the floating earbuds effect it portraits. This is a great example of packaging it is simple but it shows the product off and the product itself is very well designed, I like seeing what I am buying I cannot stress that enough o any marketing professionals out there reading this. The packaging also includes some of the features but no specifications which I was disappointed with.

Included with the Ultimate Ears MetroFi 220vi Earbuds is a carrying case, 3 silicone flange sizes and manuals. I like the hard case idea for these, I don’t like cloth bags for a $100 of earbuds to get thrashed in my pocket.

Some of the more notable options to these Because these aren’t your average earbud the Ultimate Ears MetroFi 220vi Earbuds include an inline mic and a button for answering and hanging up calls and also skipping songs. Due to the high-end quality of these earbuds it is nice to see the inclusion of a gold plated connector for added connection quality which equals better sound quality.

I love the chrome look to the Ultimate Ears MetroFi 220vi Earbuds and color coded right and left is nice for those of us that usually end up rubbing off the painted on l and r soon after purchasing our earbuds and get a puzzled look on our face everytime we reach for them.

For testing I will be running through each audio range individually; I will be focusing on highs, mids, lows, and the speed response the earbuds are capable of.  Instead of giving a mark out of 10 I will just be talking about them and giving them my personal opinion on how well they performed.

Highs (Treble):

In order to test trebles I like to listen to a lot of treble heavy stringed instrument based music like classical and older metal. Piano and cymbals are another great way to test out sibilance in treble. I was pretty impressed the Metrofi 220vi’s were very bright in their treble but not too far to the point of hissing sibilance. The performed very well for these genres of music and neither did they make the music dull nor did they pronounce the treble too much to the point of making the music difficult to enjoy over long periods.

Mids (Mid-Range):

For midrange testing I always go with alternative music, the mixture of distorted guitar and loud vocals really tests the abilities of your earbuds midrange. Because this music is also inherently bass heavy it takes serious mid-range in order to balance the bass and the vocals. This being said, again the Ultimate Ears MetroFi 220vi Earbuds performed incredibly well. I would personally say they performed as well if not better then my V-Moda Vibe ii’s which previously where one of my favorite earbuds when it comes to vocals and guitar.

Low (Bass) and Speed:

For bass it is pretty straight forward Atlanta based rap and r&b make for killer bass. The bass response on the MetroFi’s is not quite as nice as the V-moda Vibe ii’s but it performed very well. The bass was not light by any means but not in the same league as the bass from the Radius Atomic bass buds or the V-moda’s we reviewed in the past.

For fast hard hitting base and percussion the Metrofi’s performed seamlessly they were very crisp and very clear for every bass drum and snare hit. They popped with serious force compared to other buds I have used in the past. If you are a punk or house fan this buds for you.

Let’s see the final thoughts:

Over all for my tastes the Ultimate Ears MetroFi 220vi Earbuds brought their “A game.” The were nothing short of spectacular, although they didn’t quite burst my V-moda bubble they definitely performed on par the only thing the V-mod’s did a little better in were bass and the design. Considering the V-moda’s are more costly then the Ultimate Ears MetroFi 220vi Earbuds puts another point in MetroFi’s column.

Would I recommend these? Although I liked some aspects of the V-modas better the MetroFi’s sleek design and lack of useless extras like a collar clip like the V-moda give it even more points. If you are looking for a streamlined headset and a spectacular sounding ear buds check out the Ultimate Ears MetroFi 220vi Earbuds.
