Okay I will admit it the Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler may be a bit overkill for the i5 661 build but let’s be frank, this cooler looks freakin amazing and I believe that it’s silent abilities make it a practical solution to CPU cooling for a media/gaming rig. Noctua has been a relatively new comer to the CPU cooling ring in North America and since they threw their hat into said ring they have been taking home prize after prize with their impeccable design choices and cooling ability. The new Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler is a thing of beauty as well as a power house of CPU heat dispersion, this cooler although overkill is just the little extra this build needs. Let’s check it out:

Instead of what we usually do when it comes to CPU Cooler reviews; which is test them against other coolers in their class, I decided to test the Noctua NH-D14 Against stock cooling to see exactlly what benniffit there is to go to after market cooling. Here are the results (18 degrees ambient temperature):

Well even though the cooling is obvious across the board we can see that the Noctua NH-D14 really shines under Overclocked performance. 6 degrees is a very impressive difference over stock cooling; I do have to say that the stock coolers for the new Clarkdale Core i5 661’s are very impressive for their size so the fact that the Noctua beat them with such a large lead says a lot for this cooler.
So as I suspected the Noctua cooler took the lead and looked damn sexy in the process. This cooler may not be for everyone, but it is awesome looking. the tower coolers I have seen before I was taken aback by but this cooler blows them out of the water. The look of this cooler on a mATX board is somewhat ridiculous but for me it is perfect I want the look of a sleeper with all the power under the hood.
Would I recommend the Noctua NH-D14? For your moms next desktop build for her solitaire? maybe not, but for your next media box or gaming PC hell yes. This CPU will have peoples head turning at the lan party guaranteed. Do youabsolutly need a cooler like this for gaming? No, not really, but it is wicked looking and that’s reason enough for me.
